Thinking about writing this gave me a little anxiety. The reason being, is that this will be the first time acknowledging publicly that I AM A BLACK WOMAN. Yes, I'm sure you can clearly see that from my photo, or by the way I annunciate my words. But, being accepted in "white" society has been the goal for so long, that I almost forgot that I ware a color worth celebrating, worth announcing. I ware a color worth the undeniable. It wasn't until I cut off all my relaxed straight hair that I began to embrace my nappy fro. It wasn't until my natural curly locks began to form that I realized that the struggle for US as a people runs deeper then the horrible dehumanizing experience of slavery and the aftermath of racism that continues to segregate us till this very day. No, that's only a part of the struggle of this beautiful blackness that should never be denied. My hair tangles when it doesn't have enough moisture. so the ultimate struggle for me as I try hard to continue to teach my grown sons that the brilliant color they ware can get them killed if in the place where those sent to protect us decide to see the color that has been negated and devalued by a system formed against us from the beginning of the ownership of another free human was considered a thing. My lack of moisture to my hair scares me, but not like the thought of my 2 year old son, who is just beginning in this world , may be faced with the same struggles that began 400 years ago with the now platform of witnessing the brutality LIVE on every major platform, that IF a white man of authority decides to take you out, it can even be recorded and there is still no justice. The lack of moisture my hair can be exposed to doesn't compare to those pains. So what I ant to say simply is that I AM A BLACK WOMAN, A BLACK MOTHER TO MEN that are also BLACK and I love moisturizing my hair and even though we have all these obstacles set against us, I wouldn't want to be any other body. I AM A BLACK WOMAN!
